Just want Wayang Kulit?
The air is warm and smells like sweet flowers. I hear beautiful ringing music all around me. A bright light shines, and suddenly, I am dancing. I am just a shadow, a flat shape moving on a big white screen. I leap and twirl and fight mighty battles, all without saying a single word. Can you guess what I am? I am Wayang Kulit, the shadow puppets of Java in Indonesia. My name means 'shadows from leather,' and I have been telling stories for a very, very long time.
My own story began so long ago, way back in the 9th century. That's over one thousand years ago. I am made from strong buffalo leather that has been dried in the sun. Talented artists then carefully cut and punch tiny, detailed holes into the leather to make me look just right. I can be a brave hero, a beautiful princess, or even a funny monkey with a long tail. But I cannot move on my own. I need a special storyteller called the 'dalang'. The dalang is my best friend. He is the puppet master who holds my sticks, gives me all my different voices, and makes me dance behind the screen. He knows all the stories by heart and brings me to life for everyone to see.
When the sun goes down and the stars pop out, it’s my time to shine. Families gather on mats under the night sky, their faces lit by the glowing screen. The dalang sits behind the screen, and the music from a special orchestra called the gamelan begins to play. The music is full of ringing bells and gongs that make you want to dance. Then, the show starts. I act out exciting adventures from very old stories called the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. These are epic tales filled with brave warriors, tricky giants, and wise gods. But my stories are not just for fun. They teach important lessons. They show children and grown-ups how to be brave when they are scared, how to be kind to others, and how to be smart and make good choices. Sometimes the show can last all night long.

Even though I am an ancient tradition, people in Indonesia and all over the world still love me. My shadow dances are a special part of their culture. In fact, I am so special that on November 7th, 2003, a very important group called UNESCO said that I was a treasure for the whole world to protect and enjoy. I may just be a flat piece of leather, but my shadow tells some of the biggest stories ever known. I hope I remind you that with a little bit of light and a big imagination, anyone can create magic and share a story that shines brightly for everyone to see.
