The story

Diego Maradona and the 1986 World Cup

Hello. My name is Diego Maradona, and ever since I was a little boy, I loved one thing more than anything else: football. I would kick a ball around the streets of my home in Argentina, dreaming that one day I would wear the blue and white jersey of my country. My biggest dream was to play in the World Cup, the most important football tournament in the whole world. In 1986, my dream came true. My team and I traveled all the way to Mexico. The sun was so bright, and the stadiums were filled with thousands of cheering people. The air buzzed with excitement, like a giant party. Walking onto the grass for the first time felt like stepping into a different world. The cheers were so loud they felt like a big hug. My teammates and I looked at each other and smiled. We were nervous, but we were also so excited. We promised to play for each other and for all the people watching us back home.

The most exciting game for me happened on June 22nd, 1986. We were playing against a very good team from England in a giant stadium called Estadio Azteca. It was a quarter-final match, which meant if we won, we would get much closer to the final. The game was tough, and everyone was playing their best. Then, something funny happened. The ball came flying near the goal, and I jumped up high to head it in. I am not very tall, so I used a little trick. I always said that goal was scored 'a little bit with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God.' It was a sneaky goal, but it counted. Just a few minutes later, I got the ball again, but this time it was near the middle of the field. I started running. It felt like my feet were dancing with the ball. I zigged and I zagged past one player, then another, and another, all the way to the goal. It was like magic. I kicked the ball right into the net. People later called it the 'Goal of the Century.' I just felt so happy, like I was flying. We won the match, and it was a day I will never, ever forget.

After that big game, we made it all the way to the final. On June 29th, 1986, we played against West Germany for the championship. My heart was beating like a drum. The whole world was watching us. We played as a team, passing the ball and helping each other. When the final whistle blew, we had won. We were the champions of the world. I got to lift the big, golden World Cup trophy high up in the air. It was so heavy and shiny. Holding it felt like holding a dream in my hands. I did it for my team, for myself, and for all the people in Argentina. That victory showed everyone that if you practice hard, work together with your friends, and never stop believing in your dreams, amazing things can happen.
