The Story of Holi

Hello, my name is Prahlada, and I was once a prince in a grand kingdom. My father, King Hiranyakashipu, was the most powerful man I knew. He had performed difficult tasks and was granted a special blessing that made him nearly invincible. He was so strong and mighty that he began to believe he was a god himself. He commanded every person in our kingdom, from the royal court to the smallest village, to bow down and worship only him. Statues of him were built, and songs were sung in his honor. But I could not do it. My heart belonged to someone else, a divine protector named Lord Vishnu. I spent my days chanting Vishnu’s name and praying to him, which I knew was the right thing to do. My father did not see it that way. He saw my devotion as an act of defiance. His requests turned into demands, and his demands turned into threats. He could not understand why his own son would not worship him. My unwavering faith in Vishnu created a deep and dangerous conflict between my father and me, setting the stage for a terrible test.

My father’s anger grew like a storm cloud over our kingdom. He tried everything to change my mind, but my faith was a rock that could not be moved. Finally, in a fit of rage, he came up with a truly wicked plan. He called for his sister, my aunt Holika. Holika had a special gift—a magical cloak that protected her from being burned by fire. She could walk through flames without a single burn. My father’s plan was cruel and simple: a giant bonfire would be built in the center of the city. Holika would wear her protective cloak and sit in the middle of the fire, holding me on her lap. He believed the fire would burn me away, leaving Holika completely unharmed. The entire kingdom was ordered to gather and watch on the evening of the full moon. As the guards led me toward the enormous pile of wood, I will admit, my heart beat like a drum. The flames would soon be taller than our palace. But even as fear tried to creep in, I closed my eyes and whispered Lord Vishnu's name. I had a deep trust that he would not abandon me. I believed that as long as I held onto my goodness and faith, I would be protected, no matter how hot the fire burned.

As Holika and I sat atop the giant wooden pyre, the fire was lit. Flames roared to life, orange and yellow, reaching for the night sky. The heat was immense, and the crowd gasped. Just as the fire began to surround us, a powerful and mysterious gust of wind swept through the courtyard. It was no ordinary wind. It lifted Holika’s special cloak, swirling it through the air. Instead of flying away, the cloak floated down and wrapped itself gently around me, covering me completely. Protected by the cloak, I was safe from the flames. Holika, however, was not. She had used her gift for a terrible, evil purpose, and so her protection was lost. This moment, which became known as Holika Dahan, showed everyone that good will always triumph over evil. My faith had saved me. The very next day, the people of the kingdom celebrated this miracle. They rejoiced by throwing colorful powders and water on each other, washing away the sadness and fear of the past. This celebration became the festival of Holi, a time to celebrate new beginnings, forgiveness, the coming of spring, and the victory of light over darkness. My story is a reminder that faith and goodness are a shield more powerful than any magic.
