Just want Unification of Italy?
Hello there. My name is Giuseppe Garibaldi, and I want to tell you a story about my wonderful home, Italy. When I was a young man, Italy was not one big country like it is today. Imagine a beautiful puzzle, but all the pieces were scattered apart. There were many small kingdoms and states, each with its own ruler. I loved my homeland very much, and it made me sad to see it broken into so many little bits. I had a big, shining dream in my heart. I dreamed of a day when all those puzzle pieces would come together to make one strong and free country. I wanted everyone to be able to say, 'I am from Italy!', and feel proud. This dream became my life's great adventure.
My dream needed helpers, and soon, many brave people who shared my dream joined me. We became a special army of volunteers. We didn't have fancy, shiny uniforms like the king's soldiers. Instead, we all wore simple red shirts. They were easy to see and made us feel like a team. That’s why everyone started calling us the 'Redshirts'. Our red shirts were a symbol of our courage and our hope for a new Italy. In May of 1860, our most exciting adventure began. One thousand of my Redshirts and I squeezed onto two old steamboats. We sailed across the big blue sea to an island called Sicily. The people of Sicily wanted to be part of a united Italy, but their powerful king said no. We went to help them fight for their freedom. It was a very big challenge. The king's army was much larger than ours, but my Redshirts were full of bravery. We marched across the countryside, and everywhere we went, people cheered for us. Many more brave Sicilians joined our cause. They saw our red shirts coming over the hills and knew that help had arrived. We were like a growing family, all working together to put the puzzle of Italy back together, piece by piece.

After many adventures, my Redshirts and I had freed all of southern Italy. It was a wonderful feeling. But my job wasn't finished. I knew that for Italy to be truly one country, it needed a good leader for everyone. There was a king in the north of Italy named Victor Emmanuel II, who also dreamed of a united country. So, I rode my horse to meet him. It was a very important day. I said to him, 'I give you the lands my Redshirts and I have freed. Let us make Italy one.'. He shook my hand, and in that moment, our dreams joined together. On March 17th, 1861, our greatest wish came true. The Kingdom of Italy was officially born, with Victor Emmanuel II as its very first king. My heart was filled with joy. All the puzzle pieces had finally come together. My story shows that when people work together with courage and a shared dream, they can do amazing things, like building a whole new country.
