Hello! I am the Fête de la Musique. In the French language, my name means 'Festival of Music.' I am a day for celebrating sound and song. My story began in the country of France in the year 1982. The idea behind my creation was simple but wonderful: to make music free for everyone to hear and enjoy. On my special day, the goal is to fill the air with melodies of all kinds, pouring out from city streets, quiet parks, and busy town squares. I was made so that anyone who loves music can share it with their community, and anyone who wants to listen can do so without paying for a ticket.
People celebrate me on the same day every year: June 21st. This date was not picked by chance. It was chosen because it is the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. The summer solstice is a very special day because it is the longest day of the year. The sun rises early and sets very late, giving everyone many hours of daylight. This extra light makes it the perfect time for an outdoor festival. Musicians can set up their instruments and play for hours, and people can walk around and listen long into the warm evening. The long, sunny day helps make my celebration a cheerful and lively one.
When my day arrives, something amazing happens. Music seems to be everywhere! You can see musicians of all ages playing their instruments. Some are professional performers who play in big concerts, but many are people who play just for fun. A teenager might play a guitar on a street corner, a group of friends might form a rock band in a park, or a full orchestra might perform in a public square. There are no rules about what kind of music can be played. From classical tunes to drumming circles, every sound is welcome. The most important part is that all of these performances are free for everyone to enjoy. It is a day for sharing the joy of making music.

Even though my story started in France, the idea of a free music festival was too good to keep in one place. Like a popular song that everyone wants to hear, my celebration traveled across the world. Today, people in more than 120 different countries celebrate a day of music on June 21st. While many still call me Fête de la Musique, I have other names, too. In some places, people know me as World Music Day. In others, I am called Make Music Day. No matter the name, the spirit is the same: to bring people together through the wonderful power of music, played freely and joyfully for all to hear.
