Hello! I am a festival called Guelaguetza. My name is very special. In an old language, it means sharing. I visit every summer in a beautiful part of Mexico called Oaxaca. During my celebration, many people gather together. They come to share their special songs, dances, and traditions with one another. Sharing is the most important part of my festival.
People celebrate me with big, happy parades and wonderful dances. Dancers travel from many different towns all around Oaxaca to be there. They wear bright, beautiful clothes with amazing colors. Each group of dancers has their own special outfits and their own special dance. Every dance tells a story. It is a story about where the dancers are from and what makes their home special. It is lovely to see all the different stories being told through dance.
After the dances are over, there is one more special moment. This is the part that shows what my name means! The dancers toss small presents down to all the people watching them. They might toss a sweet piece of fruit or a small, woven hat. This act of giving gifts is the real 'guelaguetza.' It is my gift of sharing with everyone. It is a happy time for people to give and receive.
