The story

I Am Halloween

Hello! I am the holiday Halloween. People in America get to celebrate me one time every year. My special day is always the very last day of October. I am a time for lots of fun and playing make-believe. It is a day for seeing decorations that are a little bit spooky, but in a fun and silly way. You might see decorations of smiling skeletons or pretend spiderwebs. It is a happy time for everyone.

One of my most exciting parts is when people dress up in costumes. It is so much fun to see! Children and even grown-ups can pretend to be someone or something else just for my special day. Someone might want to be a strong superhero who can fly. Another person might dress up as a fluffy animal, like a black cat or a friendly dog. Some people choose to be a friendly ghost, floating around and saying 'Boo!' It's a wonderful day for playing dress-up and using your imagination. Everyone gets to be creative with their fun outfits.

I have other fun traditions that people enjoy. Many families get a big, round, orange pumpkin. They carefully scoop out the inside and then carve a face into it. It can be a happy, smiling face or a spooky, silly face. When they put a light inside, it glows in the dark! This is called a jack-o'-lantern. Another one of my traditions is very sweet. Children put on their costumes and walk from house to house in their neighborhoods. When they get to a door, they say, 'Trick or treat!' People give them yummy candy and treats to put in their bags. It is a special way for everyone to celebrate me.
