Just want Sinterklaas - Dutch?
Hello! I am Sinterklaas, a special and happy time of year. People celebrate me in countries called the Netherlands and Belgium. My season begins in November when a kind man arrives. This man is also called Sinterklaas! He travels on a big steamboat, and people say he comes from a sunny place called Spain. When his boat gets close, big crowds of children and their families gather to see him. They wave and sing songs to welcome him. It is a wonderful way to begin my celebration.
For the next few weeks, children get ready for my biggest event. Before they go to sleep each night, they do a special tradition. They find one of their shoes and set it by the warm fireplace. Sometimes, they leave a tasty carrot inside the shoe. The carrot is a treat for Sinterklaas’s beautiful white horse. Children also sing special Sinterklaas songs. They hope that when they wake up, a small surprise or a sweet treat will be waiting for them in their shoe. It is a quiet and exciting time.
My most exciting evening is called 'pakjesavond.' That name means 'presents evening.' On this special night, families get together to celebrate. They open presents that Sinterklaas has brought for them. The room is filled with happy sounds as they see their gifts. During this fun time, families also share my special foods. They love to eat chocolate letters and delicious, tiny spiced cookies. Sharing presents and treats is a cozy way people enjoy my final night.
