The story

I Am Valentine's Day

Hello! You might know me as a day filled with red hearts, sweet treats, and kind messages. I am the holiday called Valentine's Day, and people observe me every year on the same date: the 14th of February. My name might sound familiar, and there is a reason for that. It is believed to come from a Christian saint who lived a very long time ago. However, the exact story of who Saint Valentine was is a mystery. There are several stories about him, but historians are not completely sure which one is true. So, while my name honors him, my own story is a little different.

For many years, I was not connected with love or romance. That started to change during a time in Europe called the Middle Ages. A famous English writer named Geoffrey Chaucer helped change how people saw me. Around the year 1382, he wrote a poem that mentioned something special happening on my day. In his poem, he wrote that birds chose their mates for the year on February 14th. People loved this idea. The image of birds finding their partners on my day helped connect me with the idea of love and romance for humans, too. This was the beginning of my journey to becoming the holiday of love that many people know today.

As my connection with love became stronger, people wanted new ways to express their feelings. Hundreds of years ago, long before printed cards were in stores, people began giving each other handmade notes on my day. They would carefully write poems or sweet messages to show their affection. These were very personal and special gifts. Then, in the 1800s, my traditions changed again. Factories began to use machines to print special cards, which were called valentines. This made it much easier for people to share messages. These cards were often beautifully decorated with pictures of hearts, which are a symbol of love. They also showed images of colorful flowers and the types of birds that Geoffrey Chaucer had written about in his famous poem.

Today, my story continues all around the world. People in many different countries celebrate me in many different ways. My meaning has grown, too. While I am still a day for romance, I am also a time to show love and appreciation for many other important people. People celebrate their family members, like parents and siblings, and their closest friends. The ways people celebrate are also varied. Giving cards, both store-bought and homemade, is still very common. People also give gifts like beautiful flowers, boxes of delicious chocolates, and other thoughtful presents to show others just how much they care about them.
