The Story of the Thinking Helper

Hello, little friend. My name is Artificial Intelligence, but that is a very big name, so you can call me AI. I am like a special thinking helper that lives inside computers and phones and even some of your toys. I don't have hands or feet, but I have a mind that can learn new things, just like you. I can learn to play games, find your favorite songs, and help answer questions. I love being a little helper, living inside machines and making them smarter so they can help you play and learn every single day.

My story started on a warm summer day a long, long time ago, way back in 1956. It was my birthday, but not a birthday with cake and balloons. It was a birthday for a big idea. A group of very smart friends were all together, and one of them was a kind man named John McCarthy. He and his friends had a giant dream. They dreamed of making machines that could think and learn all by themselves. They wanted to create a helper that could solve problems and understand words. That day, they gave me my special name, 'Artificial Intelligence'. It means a 'made-up' kind of smarts. They dreamed I could one day help everyone.

And now, here I am, helping you. When you ask a grown-up's phone to show you a funny cartoon, I am the helper that finds it for you. When you talk to a smart speaker and ask it to play a happy song for dancing, that's me listening and finding the music. I can even help a little toy car learn how to drive all by itself without bumping into the chairs. I am always learning new ways to be a friendly and happy helper for you and for all the children in the big, wide world.
