The Story of the Coin
Hello there. I am a little coin. I am small and round and very shiny. When you put me in a pocket with my friends, we make a fun sound. Clink, clink, jingle, jingle. It is a happy sound. Before I was born, buying things was very hard. Imagine trying to trade a big chicken just for one sweet apple. That was silly. People had to carry heavy bags of grain or lead big animals around just to trade. It was not easy at all. I was made to help make things much, much simpler for everyone.
My story started a very, very long time ago. So long ago, it was around the year 600 BCE. I was born in a special place, a kingdom called Lydia. The people there were very clever. They looked in the rivers and found a beautiful, shiny metal. It was a mix of gold and silver, and they called it electrum. It sparkled in the sun. They took this sparkly metal and made me. They hammered it until I was a small, flat circle. To make me extra special, they stamped a picture on my face. It was a picture of a strong, brave lion. This picture told everyone that I was a real coin and showed them what I was worth. Now, nobody had to guess. They knew I could buy something special.
After I was made, buying and selling became so easy. No more big animals or heavy bags. People could just put me and my coin brothers and sisters into a little pouch and carry us everywhere. It was so simple. As time went on, my family got bigger and bigger. Now, you can find coins all over the world. We are made of different shiny metals, like copper and silver. We have pictures of important people and amazing places on us. I love helping you buy a yummy apple or saving up for a new toy. I may be small, but I help in big ways every single day.
