The Story of the Electric Motor

Hello! I am an Electric Motor! Do you like to whizz and zoom and spin? I do! It’s my favorite thing to do. I spin all day long. A long, long time ago, things didn't move so fast. Toys didn't zip and cars didn't vroom like they do now. That's because I wasn't around yet to help them spin and go. The world was much quieter and slower before I learned my special trick.

One day, a very clever friend of mine named Michael Faraday found a secret. It was a long, long time ago, on August 29th, 1831. He discovered that electricity and magnets are best friends. They love to dance together! When electricity zips by a magnet, it makes a little push and a little pull. Push, pull, push, pull! That special dance taught me how to move. It tickled me and made me want to spin around and around in a circle. I spun and spun and haven't stopped since! It was the best day ever.

Now, I am everywhere! I hide inside your favorite toys, making them race across the floor. Vroom! I am in the kitchen, helping the blender whir and mix yummy smoothies. I am in the fan that keeps you cool on a hot day, spinning its blades to make a soft breeze. I am even inside big electric cars, helping them drive quietly down the street. I am so happy I get to help everyone work and play. I love making the world a whirring, spinning, wonderful place!
