The story

The Sky's Little Helpers

Look way, way up, past the fluffy white clouds and even past the big blue sky. What do you think is up there? There are special helpers zooming all around the Earth. This is the story of an amazing helper called GPS. GPS is a team of shiny satellite friends. They look like big, metal birds with sparkly wings that catch the sun. These friends fly in a big line around the world, playing a game of follow-the-leader in space. They work together like a team of twinkling stars to show everyone down below where to go. They make sure no one gets lost.

A long, long time ago, some very smart people had a big idea. They wanted to help people find their way, no matter where they were. So, they built the very first satellite friend and sent it into space on a big, loud rocket. WHOOSH. Up it went, into the dark, starry sky to join the moon and stars. The smart people taught the satellite how to play a special game. It learned to send tiny, quiet whispers down to Earth. You can't see the whispers, and you can't hear them, but they are there. These magical whispers travel super-fast. They travel all the way down to a grown-up's phone or the map in a car. The whispers tell the phone exactly where it is on the big, round world. It's like a secret message from the sky.

Today, the GPS team helps in so many fun ways. When your family gets in the car to go to the playground, GPS helps show the way. It tells the car to turn left or go straight ahead. It helps make sure you get to the big, tall slide and the fun swings. GPS also helps big airplanes fly safely through the clouds, taking people on wonderful trips to see new places. The GPS satellites are so happy to be a guide for everyone. They love helping people explore our big, beautiful world and find their way on every single adventure, making sure you always get where you need to go.
