I Make Pictures Dance!

Hello there. My name is Movie Projector, and I have a magical job. Before I came along, pictures were very quiet and still. They would just sit on a piece of paper or in a frame, never moving an inch. But I had a secret. I learned how to wake them up. I use a very bright light, almost like a tiny sun, that shines through a long ribbon of pictures. These pictures fly past my light so fast, faster than you can blink, and a special lens makes them big and beautiful. When they land on a giant white screen, it looks like they are alive. They can run, jump, laugh, and dance. It’s my favorite trick, making still pictures come to life so everyone can watch a story together in the dark.

My story begins with two very clever brothers from a country called France. Their names were Auguste and Louis Lumière, and they were full of wonderful ideas. They saw other inventions that could show tiny moving pictures to one person at a time, but they dreamed bigger. “What if,” they said, “we could make a machine that shows stories to a whole room full of people at once?”. So they worked and worked, tinkering with gears and lenses, until one day, I was born. They called me the ‘Cinématographe,’ which is a very fancy name. The most exciting day of my life was December 28th, 1895. In a cozy room in Paris, the brothers invited people to see me work for the very first time. I was a little nervous, but I shone my light as brightly as I could. The first thing I showed was a train pulling into a station. The people in the audience gasped. Some even jumped out of their seats because the train looked so real, they thought it was going to roll right into the room. They had never seen anything like it. They laughed and clapped, and I knew I was going to be great friends with people.

After that first show, everything changed. Soon, special buildings called movie theaters started popping up everywhere. Families and friends would get dressed up, buy a ticket and some popcorn, and come to see me. I took them on amazing adventures without ever leaving their seats. With my bright light, they could explore thick jungles, swim in the deep blue sea, or blast off to outer space. I showed them funny cartoons that made them giggle and stories about heroes that made them cheer. I was a window to the whole world and to worlds that only existed in dreams. Even though you might watch movies on your television or a small tablet now, I am the great-grandparent of all of them. My job has always been the same: to gather people together and share amazing stories. I helped make dreams bigger, brighter, and shareable with everyone.
