The story

I Am the Railroad

Hello. I am the railroad. I am a long, strong path made of two shiny metal tracks that stretch for miles and miles. Before I was here, everything moved so slowly. Big horses pulled heavy wagons on bumpy, muddy roads. It was hard work for the horses, and it took a very, very long time to get anywhere. People needed a better and faster way to travel. They wanted to visit family in faraway towns and move important things from one place to another much more quickly.

A very clever man in a place called England had a wonderful idea. His name was George Stephenson. He watched how puffy white steam from hot water had the power to push and pull things. He thought and thought, and then he decided to build me. He laid down my two smooth, strong iron rails side by side, creating a perfect path for wheels to roll on. I was so excited to be born. My very first big day was September 27th, 1825. On that day, the first steam train chugged along my tracks. It went 'choo-choo' and puffed out big clouds of steam. The train pulled wagons full of coal and even carried happy, waving people. It was a very special trip.

My job became very important. I helped connect towns and cities that were far apart. My tracks went over hills, across bridges, and through dark tunnels. I made the world feel bigger because people could see new places they had never seen before. I also made the world feel smaller because it was much easier and faster to visit friends and family. I loved helping people feel closer together. Today, my tracks are all over the world, and I still help big trains carry people and things everywhere they need to go with a happy 'Choo-choo.'.
