The Story of the Little Safety Pin
Hello there. I am a little safety pin. I am so shiny and bright. Look at my body. It has a spring in the middle that goes boing, boing, boing when you squeeze it. On one end, I am a little bit pointy. But do not worry. I have a special little hat that covers my pointy tip so no one gets a poke. Before I came along, things could be tricky. A baby's diaper might wiggle loose. A shirt might slip and slide. People needed a safe way to hold things together, and that is why I am here to help.
My story begins with my good friend, a kind man named Walter Hunt. A long, long time ago, he was sitting and thinking. He had a piece of wire in his hands and he twisted it. He twisted it this way and that way. He bent it into a loop and made my springy middle. Then, he made a clever little cover for my pointy end. He made my special hat. He looked at me and thought I was something new and helpful. He made me so my pointy part could be tucked away, all safe and sound. That is how I became a safety pin. It was a very special day on April 10th, 1849. I was so excited to start my job of helping people.
Now, I have so many important jobs to do. I help keep babies' diapers snug and comfy so they can play all day. If you get a little rip in your shirt, I can hold it together until it gets fixed. I love helping with arts and crafts too. I can hold ribbons on a project or keep pieces of paper together. I am very small, but I am a very big helper. It makes me so happy to be a useful little friend. I want everyone to know that even a tiny, simple idea can make a big, big difference in the world.
