The Story of Slippery Teflon
Hello, I'm Teflon. I am a super slippery coating that helps in the kitchen. Have you ever seen an egg slide right out of a pan like magic? Whee. That’s me. I am the reason food doesn't get sticky and yucky when it's cooking. I make cooking and cleaning up so much easier for your grown-ups. It feels so good to help everyone make yummy food without a big, sticky mess. I love being helpful.
I was a happy accident. On April 6th, 1938, a very smart scientist named Roy Plunkett was working in his lab. He was trying to make something new and cold for refrigerators. He had a special bottle that he thought was full of gas, but when he opened the valve, nothing came out. He was so curious. He wondered what could be inside. So, he carefully sawed the bottle open and found a mysterious, waxy, white powder. He touched it and it was the most slippery thing he had ever felt. That powder was me. It was such a fun surprise.
It took a little while to go from a surprise powder in a lab to your kitchen. People soon realized that my special slipperiness was perfect for cooking pans. They put me on the inside of pots and pans so food wouldn't stick. Now, I get to help make yummy pancakes, gooey grilled cheese, and slidy eggs for breakfast. I help your family cook happy meals together without making a big mess. It all started with a surprise, and now I get to help you every day. I love being the reason your food slides right onto your plate.
