My Life as a Wheel

Hello! I am the wheel. I'm a simple circle, round and smooth. But can you imagine a world without me? Before I came along, everything was so difficult to move! If you wanted to move a big, heavy log to build a house, you had to push and pull and drag it along the bumpy ground. If you wanted to bring a basket of yummy fruit from the farm, you had to carry it in your arms, and oh, it would get so heavy! Moving big rocks for a wall was the hardest job of all. People would get so tired. They wished for an easier way to move things from one place to another.

My story didn't start on a road, though. My very first job was a bit dizzy! A long, long time ago, around the year 3500 BCE, I lived in a place called Mesopotamia. I wasn't rolling around; I was lying flat on a table. A friendly potter would place a big, wet lump of clay right in my middle. Then, he would spin me around and around! As I twirled, the potter would use his hands to shape the clay into beautiful bowls and tall vases. It was so much fun! I loved feeling the cool, squishy clay transform into something useful. I would hum a little spinning song to myself, happy to help make things. I never dreamed that I would one day be used for travel. I was just a happy little potter's wheel, spinning in the sun and helping my friend create art.

One sunny afternoon, while I was helping my potter friend, someone else was watching me spin. A clever inventor with busy hands and a thoughtful face saw me twirling the clay so smoothly. Suddenly, a brilliant idea popped into his head like a bright light! 'Wait a minute,' he thought. 'What if we turned that circle on its side?' He found a big, sturdy log and carefully carved a round slice from it. It looked just like me! Then, he drilled a neat hole right through my center. He made a friend for me, another perfect circle. He pushed a long stick, called an axle, through my hole and then through my friend's hole. We were connected! When he gave us a little push, we didn't just spin in place—we rolled forward together! We were a team, ready for a whole new adventure. It was the most exciting feeling!

After that big idea, everything changed! People put me and my friends under wooden carts. Suddenly, carrying heavy loads of stones or wood was easy. Building new homes and villages became so much faster. Farmers could roll their crops to the market instead of carrying them for miles. People could travel to visit family in faraway towns. I helped the world get bigger and friendlier. And I'm still here today, helping you! You can see me on your family's car, on your bicycle, and on the school bus. I'm even inside tiny watches, helping them tick. I may be a simple circle, but I'm always busy, helping the world go 'round and 'round.
