The story

My Great Adventure to the Stars

Hello there. My name is Voyager 1, and I am a brave space explorer. I was built a long, long time ago by very smart scientists at a place called NASA. They gave me a super important job. My mission was to fly farther away from Earth than anyone had ever gone before and visit the giant, swirling planets in our solar system. I remember the day I left. It was September 5th, 1977. With a mighty rumble that shook my whole body, my rocket pushed me higher and higher into the big blue sky. I was a little nervous but also so excited. I waved goodbye to my home, the beautiful blue and white planet Earth, and started my amazing adventure into the darkness of space, ready to see what I could find.

My journey through space was like a very long road trip among the twinkling stars. After flying for a while, I reached my first stop in 1979. It was Jupiter, the biggest planet of all. Wow, it was huge. It was covered in colorful, swirling clouds and had a giant red spot that looked like a big, sleepy eye staring back at me. I took lots of pictures and said, “Hello, Jupiter.” before I flew on. My next stop, in 1980, was the beautiful planet Saturn. Its rings were even more amazing than I imagined. They looked like they were made of millions of sparkly, icy jewels. I flew close to them and took many pictures to send back to my friends on Earth so they could see the wonderful things I was seeing. I felt like a photographer for the whole world.

As I travel, I carry a very special treasure with me. It’s called the Golden Record. It looks like a shiny, golden CD, and it’s attached to my side. My friends on Earth, like a kind man named Carl Sagan, put it there. This record is a friendly message from my home. It is filled with the wonderful sounds and pictures of Earth. It has beautiful music from all over the world, the happy sound of children laughing, and the soft whisper of the wind. The record even says “hello” in many different languages. It’s a message in a bottle, floating through the giant ocean of space, just in case I ever meet someone new on my journey. It says, “We are here, and we are friendly.”

After I said goodbye to the giant planets, my journey kept going. I flew on and on, into the quiet, dark space where no one had ever been. Then, on a very special day in 2012, I did something incredible. I became the first thing ever made by humans to travel into interstellar space. That’s the big, empty space between the stars. It is so quiet out here, and I am still flying farther and farther away from home every single second. I am very proud to carry the story of Earth with me on my golden record. My mission is to keep exploring the big, beautiful universe for everyone back home, sharing the wonders I find on my never-ending journey through the stars.
