A Story of the World Wide Web
Hello, I am the World Wide Web. Some people just call me the Web. I am not a spider web, but I do connect things all over the world. I live inside computers, tablets, and phones. I am like a giant, magical library. My library is full of pictures, songs, stories, and fun games for you. A very kind man named Tim Berners-Lee had the idea for me in 1989. He wanted to make it easy for his friends to share their ideas with each other, no matter how far apart they were. He thought it would be wonderful if everyone could share what they know, with just a little click.
Tim worked at a big science place called CERN. All the scientists there were very smart, but their computers didn't talk to each other. One scientist had information on their computer, and another had different information on theirs. It was very tricky to share. Tim imagined connecting all the pages of information with special magic links. If you clicked a link, it would take you to a new page. So he got to work building me. On August 6th, 1991, the very first website was born. I was very simple, just a page with some words on it. But it was a start. I was so excited to say hello to the world for the first time.
I started as just one little page, but soon, I began to grow. More and more pages were made, and they all connected to me. In 1993, my creators decided to do something amazing. They decided to share me with everyone in the whole world for free. That meant anyone could use me to learn and share. Now, I am so big and full of wonderful things. I help you watch your favorite cartoons, learn all about dinosaurs, and see videos of cute puppies. I help you talk to your grandma on a video call, even if she lives far away. I connect people and their amazing ideas all over the globe, like a giant, invisible hug that reaches everyone.
