The story

The Dance of the Pincoya

Hello. My home is the big, shiny blue sea. The water goes splash, splash, splash. My name is Pincoya, and I live near the pretty islands of Chiloé. My dress is made of green, green seaweed. It is so soft and swishy. Swish, swish, swish. I love to dance and feel the cool water on my feet. My papa is the King of the Sea. His name is Millalobo. My mama is Huenchula. They taught me how to talk to the fishies. This is the story of my special dance. It is a story from a place called Chilote Mythology.

I have a wonderful husband. His name is Pincoy. We dance together on the sand. We twirl and spin. Twirl, twirl, twirl. We spin, spin, spin. I have a big smile when I dance. If I dance and look at the big, big ocean, it is a happy sign. It means yummy fish are coming. So many fish. The fishermen will be so happy. But sometimes, I dance and look at the sandy beach. This means the fish are sleepy. Shhh. The fishermen should let the fish rest and be quiet for a little while.

The people on the islands watch me dance. My dance helps them know when to go fishing. It helps them be friends with the big ocean. My story helps everyone remember to love the sea. Be kind to the sea and say thank you for the yummy fish. When you see little waves dance on the sand, maybe you will think of me. I am the Pincoya, and the sea loves to tell stories.
