The story

Hansel and Gretel

In a cozy little cottage near a big, green forest lived a brother and sister. The girl's name was Gretel, and her brother was Hansel. One sunny day, they went into the forest to pick berries, but they wandered so far that all the tall trees looked the same. This is the very old German fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel.

Deep in the woods, they saw a surprise. It was a little house made of yummy treats. The house was made of gingerbread. It had shiny candy windows and a chocolate roof. A kind old woman with a sparkly smile opened the door. She invited them inside for a snack. It was fun, but soon they missed their family. They missed their own comfy beds. Hansel and Gretel knew they had to be brave and find their way home.

Hansel and Gretel held hands very tightly. Gretel saw the big, bright sun in the sky. She remembered which way it was shining when they left home. “Let’s follow the sun,” she said. They walked and walked, past the tall, tall trees. Soon, they saw their little cottage peeking through the woods. Their parents were so happy to see them and gave them big, big hugs. Their story shows that even little children can be very clever and brave when they work together.
