The story

The Great Race of the Zodiac

From my palace among the clouds, I watched the world below. The sun and moon danced across the sky, but the people on Earth had no way to mark the passing of years, which made planning for harvests and festivals a muddle of guesswork. I am the Jade Emperor, ruler of Heaven, and I saw their confusion and felt a great sympathy for them. I decided to create a calendar, one that would be easy to remember and full of stories they could pass down through generations. To do this, I needed help from the wonderful creatures of the Earth. I would hold a great contest, a spectacular race, to choose twelve animals to represent the years. This is the story of how that happened, the tale known as the Great Race.

I sent a message on a shimmering cloud to every corner of the world: the first twelve animals to cross the great, wide river and reach my Heavenly Gate would be honored forever with a year named after them. The news spread like wildfire. The mighty Tiger roared with excitement, certain his strength would win the day. The clever Rabbit twitched its nose in thought, already planning a route. The proud Dragon soared in anticipation, his scales glittering in the sun. On the day of the race, the riverbank was a chaotic and thrilling scene, crowded with animals of all shapes and sizes. The water churned and rushed, a mighty challenge for even the strongest swimmer. The Pig, who loved a good nap more than almost anything, nearly missed the start. Can you imagine oversleeping for the most important race in history? The clever Rat and the strong, kind Ox were among the first to arrive at the water's edge. The Rat, being so small, knew it couldn't cross the powerful current alone. It saw the Ox preparing to plunge in and had a brilliant, audacious idea. "Dear Ox," the Rat squeaked, "you are so strong and I am so small. Would you kindly let me ride on your back? I will sing to you to keep your spirits up.". The good-natured Ox agreed, and they set off together into the swirling water.

I watched from my gate as the Ox swam with powerful, steady strokes, not bothered at all by the rushing current. As he neared the opposite bank, strong and triumphant, the wily Rat did something astonishing. Instead of thanking the Ox and hopping off, it scurried down his back, leaped onto the shore, and dashed to the finish line, becoming the very first animal to arrive. The Ox came in a noble second, not even upset, just impressed by the Rat’s cleverness. Soon after, the powerful Tiger emerged from the water, shaking his magnificent striped coat and roaring, to take third place. He complained about the strong current, which had made his journey difficult. The nimble Rabbit, who had cleverly hopped across on stepping stones and a floating log, arrived fourth. Then, the magnificent Dragon descended from the sky to take fifth place. I was surprised. "You can fly. Why were you not first?" I asked. He explained, "I had to stop to bring rain to a thirsty village, Your Majesty.". I nodded, pleased by his noble act. Just then, a hiss was heard, and the clever Snake slithered out from where it had hidden on the Horse's hoof. This so startled the Horse that it reared back, allowing the Snake to take sixth place, with the poor, surprised Horse coming in seventh. Not long after, a raft appeared, carrying three animals who had worked together: the gentle Goat, the playful Monkey, and the proud Rooster. They had found the raft and shared the work of paddling it across, earning them the eighth, ninth, and tenth places. The loyal Dog, who had been splashing and enjoying the cool water so much he almost forgot it was a race, paddled in for eleventh place. Finally, just as I was about to close the gate, I heard an oink. The Pig trotted in, explaining he had stopped for a snack and a quick nap. He became the twelfth and final animal of our new zodiac.

And so, the twelve years were named, and my great calendar was complete. Each animal brought its own spirit to the cycle: the Rat’s cleverness, the Ox’s diligence, the Tiger’s courage, and the cooperation of the Goat, Monkey, and Rooster. For thousands of years, people have told the story of the Great Race. It helps them remember the order of the years and tells them a little something about the character of each animal. When families celebrate the Lunar New Year, they welcome the spirit of that year's animal into their homes. The story shows that it doesn't matter if you are big or small, fast or slow. Qualities like cleverness, kindness, and teamwork are what truly matter in the end. This ancient tale continues to inspire art, stories, and celebrations, connecting everyone to a time of myth and wonder that I was proud to create.
