The story

Keloğlan and the Giant

Hello. My name is Keloğlan, and in my village nestled in the rolling hills of Anatolia, everyone knows me as the 'bald boy.' I live with my dear mother in a small, cozy cottage, and while we don't have much gold, our home is filled with love. Some people look at me and see a simple boy, not very big or strong, but my mother always told me my greatest strength was inside my head. And she was right. I'm going to tell you the story of how my quick thinking helped me face a great, big problem, a tale that people in Turkey call the story of Keloğlan and the Giant. It all started on a sunny morning, but a big shadow was about to fall over our happy kingdom. I didn't know it yet, but I was about to go on the biggest adventure of my life.

One day, a fearsome giant stomped into the lands near our kingdom. He was as tall as a cypress tree and had a voice like rumbling thunder. He scared everyone and demanded food from all the villages. The Sultan was worried and promised a big reward to anyone who could make the giant leave. The strongest knights tried, but their shiny swords were like toothpicks to the giant. Seeing everyone so afraid, I decided I had to do something. I walked right up to the giant's camp. He laughed when he saw me. 'What can a little bald boy do?' he boomed. I challenged him not to a fight, but to a contest. 'Let's see who is stronger.' I said. First, I bet I could squeeze water from a stone. The giant grabbed a rock and squeezed with all his might, but nothing happened. Then, it was my turn. I took out a small, gray stone from my pocket—which was really a sponge I had soaked in water—and squeezed a stream of water out. The giant was shocked. Next, I challenged him to a rock-throwing contest to see who could throw one over the highest mountain. The giant hurled a huge boulder, but it only made it halfway up. I then picked up a tiny 'rock'—which was actually a little bird I was hiding—and tossed it into the air. The bird flew up, up, up, and over the mountain peak. The giant’s eyes grew wide with disbelief.

The giant, completely fooled and a little bit scared of my 'magical' strength, packed his big bags and ran away as fast as his thumping feet could carry him. He promised never to bother our kingdom again. When I returned to the city, the whole kingdom was celebrating. The Sultan was so happy and impressed by my cleverness that he gave me a wonderful reward of shiny gold coins and, more importantly, his respect. Everyone cheered for me. I went home to my mother, not just as Keloğlan the bald boy, but as Keloğlan the hero. My adventure showed everyone that you don't need big muscles to solve big problems. A clever mind and a brave heart are the most powerful tools of all, and I was happy to prove it.

For hundreds of years, my story and many others like it have been told by grandparents at bedtime and by storytellers in village squares all across Turkey. These tales remind children that anyone can be a hero, no matter how small they seem or if they look different. They teach that kindness, courage, and a quick wit are treasures more valuable than gold. Even today, the story of Keloğlan inspires kids to think creatively and to believe in themselves, connecting them to a long tradition of celebrating the hero inside us all.
