The story

The Myth of Kyiv's Founding

Look. Here are three brothers. Their names are Kyi, Shchek, and Khoryv. They have a sister, too. Her name is Lybid. One day, they stood on a big, green hill. The sun was warm and yellow. Down below, a big river sparkled. It was a long, sparkly, blue river. The brothers and their sister had a happy idea. 'Let's build a home here.' This is the story of how they built a city. It is the myth of Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and Lybid.

It was time to build. Build, build, build. Kyi was the oldest brother. He said, 'Let's start.' Shchek went up one hill. It was a good hill. Khoryv went up another hill. It was a good hill, too. Their sister, Lybid, saw a pretty little river. She sang a happy song to the water. They all worked together. They carried big stones. They carried long wood. They worked and laughed all day. They built and sang all day. Soon, they had a little town on the sunny, green hills.

Their town was all finished. Hooray. Everyone was so happy. They needed a name for their town. What should they call it? They named it Kyiv, after the oldest brother, Kyi. What a good name. The hills were named for Shchek and Khoryv, and the little river was named for Lybid. The small town grew bigger and bigger. It grew into a big, beautiful city that is still there today. This story reminds us that when we work together, we can build wonderful things that last a very long time.
