The story

Manco Cápac and the Golden Staff

The light of my father, the Sun, felt warm on my face as I stepped out of the shimmering waters of Lake Titicaca. My name is Manco Cápac, and beside me was my sister and wife, the kind Mama Ocllo. Our father, the great sun god Inti, sent us on a very important mission because he saw the people on Earth were lost. They lived in caves and didn't know how to work together. He gave us a special golden staff that gleamed as brightly as his own sunbeams. 'Walk far and wide,' he commanded. 'When you find a place where this staff sinks easily into the soil, you will build a great city there.' This was the myth of Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, our story. With the golden staff in my hand, we set off to find our new home.

Our journey took us through tall, pointy mountains and deep, green valleys. The air was crisp and cool. Everywhere we went, we saw people who needed help. They huddled in chilly caves and didn't know how to grow their own food. So, we decided to teach them. I gathered the men and showed them how to use a plow to soften the earth. 'Watch,' I said, as I pushed the tool through the dirt. 'This is how you prepare the land for seeds.' I taught them to plant corn and quinoa and how to build little canals, like tiny rivers, to bring water to their crops. We also worked together to build strong houses out of stone, so they would be safe and warm. While I worked with the men, Mama Ocllo gathered the women. She showed them how to spin the soft, fluffy wool from llamas and alpacas into long threads. Then, with gentle hands, she taught them to weave the threads into colorful blankets and warm clothes. She also taught them how to cook delicious meals and make a happy home for their families. After teaching the people in one village, I would take out the golden staff and test the ground. But each time, it just bounced off the hard dirt. The right place was not here. So we would say goodbye and continue our search, with many of the grateful people choosing to follow us.

After walking for a very long time, we came to a beautiful valley. The grass was green, flowers bloomed everywhere, and a gentle river flowed through it. It felt special, like a secret hug from the mountains. I had a feeling this was the place. With my heart beating like a drum, I held the golden staff high and then pushed it into the ground. This time was different. Instead of stopping, the staff sank into the soft soil as if it were water. It went down, down, down, until it completely disappeared. Our father, Inti, had given us the sign. We had found our home. 'Here.' I shouted with joy. 'We will build our city here.' We named the city Cusco, and it became the amazing capital of our new Inca Empire. We made fair laws and taught everyone how to live together as one big family. This story was told to all the Inca children so they would remember where they came from and how our great civilization began. It's a tale about working together and building something wonderful, a story that still fills the people of the Andes with pride.
