The story

The Queen of the Quiet Land

In a land of quiet stars and soft shadows lives a kind queen. Her name is Mictecacihuatl. She watches over a very special, sleepy kingdom. This kingdom is called Mictlān. The mountains in Mictlān are always sleepy. The rivers sing soft, whispering songs. It is a cozy home, a warm place for memories to rest. This is the story of that special place, the land of Mictlān. When a person's life is done, their spirit begins a new adventure. It is a long, gentle walk to a forever home. The journey is not scary. It is a beautiful walk to the quiet kingdom.

When a spirit begins its journey, it is as light as a butterfly's wing. It does not go alone. A friendly little dog with warm eyes comes to be its guide. The dog is a special guide called a Xoloitzcuintli. Together, they walk past tall mountains that touch the big, blue sky. They walk through deserts where the wind sings a soft tune. They come to a wide, gentle river. How will the spirit cross? The little dog helps. The spirit rides on the dog’s strong back. Splash, splash, they go across the water. Soon, they arrive at the gates of Mictlān. Queen Mictecacihuatl welcomes them to their forever home, a place of peace. Today, this story helps us remember our loved ones. People build pretty tables with bright orange flowers, yummy foods, and happy pictures. It reminds us that love shines brightly, like a star in the quiet kingdom.
