The story

The Myth of Sobek, the Crocodile God

Splash, splash, splash! Hello from the big river! My name is Sobek. I am a big, strong crocodile. I have a happy smile. I swim in the cool, blue water. Pretty flowers float by. Float, float, float. This is the sunny land of Egypt. It was a long, long time ago. People told a special story about me. It is the myth of Sobek. I helped make the world green and bright. So green and so bright!

I have a very important job. A very, very important job. I take care of the big river. Swish, swoosh! I help the water go up, up, up. The water hugs the land. Now the ground is soft and wet. It is perfect for yummy food to grow. So many yummy treats! People see me sleeping in the warm sun. They feel safe and happy. They know I am watching them. I am a friend to the king, the pharaoh. I keep him safe. I keep everyone safe.

The people were so happy. So very, very happy. They built big, tall houses for me. The houses were right by the water. Inside, they painted pictures of me on the walls. Look, a picture of a strong crocodile! That’s me! They told stories about me to their little boys and girls. That was a long, long time ago. But you can still see my picture today. If you see a crocodile drawing from Egypt, you can say, “Hello, Sobek!”. My story is about being strong. It is about helping our friends. Be strong and kind, just like me.
