The story

The Mead of Poetry

There once was a giant named Suttungr. He was a very big giant! He lived deep inside a tall, rocky mountain where he kept a secret treasure. It was not gold. It was not shiny jewels. It was a sparkly, special drink in three big, big pots. This was the Mead of Poetry! One tiny sip, and you could tell the most wonderful stories. One tiny sip, and you could sing the most beautiful songs. Suttungr asked his daughter, Gunnlod, to help him guard the mead. They kept all the best stories secret. This is the story of the Mead of Poetry.

One day, a visitor came to the tall mountain. He was a very tricky visitor! He found a secret way to get inside the mountain. He was very sneaky. The visitor told Suttungr's daughter that he was very, very thirsty. He asked, "Can I please have three little sips?". She thought three little sips was okay. But the visitor was very tricky! For his first sip, he drank the whole first pot. Gulp, gulp, gone! For his second sip, he drank the whole second pot. Gulp, gulp, gone! For his third sip, he drank the very last drop from the third pot. Gulp, gulp, gone! All the treasure was gone.

The giant Suttungr was so surprised. Before he could even shout, the tricky visitor changed! He turned into a great big eagle with strong wings. Whoosh! He flew right out of the mountain, fast as the wind. He carried all the magical mead to Asgard, the home of the gods, and shared it with everyone. Now, the whole world was filled with wonderful stories and happy songs for everyone to enjoy. So when you hear a great story or sing a fun song, you are sharing a little drop of that magical mead. The myth of Suttungr's Mead shows us that stories are a special treasure meant for sharing.
