Just want The Heinzelmännchen of Cologne - German?
Shhh, can you keep a secret? My name is Heinz, and you’ve probably never seen me, but I’ve seen you! Long, long ago, in the cozy city of Cologne in Germany, the people were the happiest and most rested folks you could ever meet. At night, while everyone was tucked in their beds, my friends and I would creep out from our hiding spots. We are the Heinzelmännchen, and this is our story, the myth of the Heinzelmännchen of Cologne.
We loved to work! We’d scamper into the baker’s shop, and while he snored, we’d mix the dough and bake warm, crusty bread that smelled like heaven. We’d zip over to the tailor’s workshop, where we’d snip and sew, making the most beautiful clothes. The carpenter would leave out wood, and we’d build sturdy chairs and tables before the sun came up. Every morning, the people of Cologne would wake up and gasp with delight! Their work was all finished, perfectly done as if by magic. They never knew who was helping them, and that was just how we liked it. Our only rule was that we must never, ever be seen.
But one person, the tailor’s wife, was very, very curious. 'Who are these magical helpers?' she wondered day and night. 'I just have to see them!' We heard her whispering and knew that trouble was brewing. One evening, she scattered dried peas all over the wooden stairs leading down to the workshop. That night, as we tiptoed down to start our sewing, our little feet slipped on the round peas! We tumbled and stumbled, clattering and bumping all the way to the bottom. Suddenly, a lantern light flashed on, and there was the tailor's wife, staring right at us with wide eyes! Our secret was out.

A Story to Remember
We were so sad and startled that we vanished in a puff of dust, never to return. From that day on, the people of Cologne had to do all their own work. The story of our disappearance was told to children and their children’s children. It became a legend to remind people to be thankful for the good things they have and that some mysteries are best left unsolved. Today, if you visit Cologne, you can see a beautiful fountain that shows us tumbling down the stairs. Our story helps people imagine a world full of secret magic and kindness, reminding us all to wonder about the little bits of good that happen every day, seen or unseen.
