The story

Our Panda Family: The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Hello! We are the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Our story began in 1987 in a city called Chengdu in China. Back then, the beautiful giant pandas were in danger. This meant there were not very many of them left in the world, and they needed help to survive. Our important job was to create a safe place for them. We started our work with just six giant pandas. These were not pandas from a zoo; they were special pandas that had been rescued from the wild. They were in trouble and needed our care, so we welcomed them to their new home.

Once the six pandas arrived, our first big task was to build them a home where they would feel safe, happy, and comfortable. It couldn't be just any home. We worked hard to make it feel just like the bamboo forests where giant pandas naturally live. This meant planting lots of bamboo, which is their favorite food! We made sure they had places to climb, play, and rest, just as they would in the wild. Our scientists and zookeepers watched over them carefully, making sure they were healthy and had everything they needed to thrive.

After we made a safe home, we started on our next goal: helping to grow the panda family. It is very important to have more pandas in the world so they will not be in danger anymore. We have a special panda nursery where panda mothers can give birth and raise their tiny babies. Our team helps make sure the mothers and their cubs are healthy and strong. This work has been a wonderful success! Because of the care we provide, our panda family has grown from the first six pandas to more than 200 pandas living at our base today.

Having over 200 pandas is amazing, but our work doesn't stop there. We don't want the pandas to live with us forever. Our biggest and most important goal is for them to live freely in the wild where they belong. To get them ready, we teach our young pandas all the skills they will need to survive on their own. They learn how to find food and live independently, just like a wild panda would. This training is very important for their future.

Our dream is to release the pandas we have raised back into large, protected forests. This gives them a chance to live in their natural home and helps the number of wild pandas grow. Today, we do more than just care for pandas here at our base. We also have another important job: teaching people. We help visitors from all over the world understand why giant pandas are so special and why it is so important to protect them. By sharing their stories, we hope everyone will help us make sure these amazing animals are safe for many, many years to come.
