The story

We Are the IUCN: A Team for Nature

Hello! We are the International Union for Conservation of Nature, but you can call us by our initials, IUCN. Our most important job is to protect nature all over the world. We began our work in 1948 in a town called Fontainebleau, in France. From the very beginning, we were a special kind of team, made up of governments from different countries and groups of experts who knew a lot about science. We believe that by working together, we can do a better job of caring for our planet.

One of our most famous projects is the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. You can think of it like a health check for the world's animals and plants. This special list helps us understand which living things are doing well and which ones are in trouble. It shows us which species are safe, which ones might be in danger soon, and which ones are very close to disappearing forever. This information is very powerful because it helps scientists and leaders know where to focus their help and which animals or plants need our protection the most.

The Red List doesn't just point out problems; it helps us find solutions and celebrate successes! For example, the giant panda was once on our Red List with the label 'Endangered.' This meant it was in serious danger of becoming extinct. Because the list showed how much trouble the pandas were in, people all over the world worked hard to protect them and their forest homes. After many years of this conservation work, the number of giant pandas started to grow. This wonderful progress allowed us to improve its status on the list, which shows that our actions can save species.

Besides watching over different species, we also work to protect the places where they live. We help countries create and manage special protected areas, like national parks and nature reserves. Think of these places as safe homes where wildlife can thrive. In these areas, animals can find food and raise their families without danger, and amazing plants can grow freely. We help governments identify which forests, oceans, and mountains are the most important to save, making sure that nature has a safe space for many years to come.

Today, our work continues as a large global partnership. We are a union of more than 1,400 member organizations, and we work with over 15,000 experts who share their knowledge with us. Together, we share what we have learned about the environment and try to find the best solutions to problems facing our planet. Our goal is to help build a healthy future for both nature and all the people who depend on it.
