Projeto TAMAR

Hello! We are Projeto TAMAR. Our name means Sea Turtle Project in a language spoken in Brazil, where we work. We are a special group of helpers. Our most important job is to take care of amazing animals: the sea turtles! We work on the long, sandy beaches where the big blue ocean meets the land. This is the special place where mother sea turtles come to have their families.

Mother sea turtles swim from far, far away to visit these beaches. When a mother turtle arrives, she uses her strong flippers to dig a cozy nest deep in the sand. Inside this safe, warm hole, she carefully lays her eggs. Our job is to be nest protectors. We walk up and down the beach, looking very carefully for turtle tracks. When we find a nest, we make sure to protect it. We help keep the eggs safe from harm until they are ready to hatch.

After waiting for many days, something wonderful happens. The baby turtles are ready to come out! They break out of their eggs and wiggle up, up, up through the sand. It’s a very exciting time! These tiny turtles need to get to the big ocean to start their lives. We are there to help them on their very first big journey. We watch over the baby turtles as they crawl across the sand toward the water. We make sure they get there safely. Splish, splash, into the sea they go!

We love our work at Projeto TAMAR. Helping the baby turtles reach the ocean is a very important job. By keeping the nests safe and guiding the little ones to the water, we help make sure there will always be sea turtles swimming in the beautiful blue ocean for years and years to come.
