The story

Our Home of Blue-Green Water

Hello! We are the Havasupai. Our name means something very special. It means we are the “People of the Blue-Green Water.” We want to tell you about our home.

We live deep down inside a beautiful, big place called the Grand Canyon. It is a land of tall red rocks and bright blue sky. The most wonderful part of our home is a special creek. The water that flows here isn't like other water. It is a brilliant blue-green color. It looks like a jewel sparkling in the sunshine. This has been our home for a very, very long time, and we love our blue-green water.

Long ago, our families had two homes, and we moved with the seasons. In the warm summer, we lived down in the bottom of the canyon. The sun kept our gardens warm, and we grew lots of yummy food to eat. When winter came and the air grew chilly, we moved up to the land on top of the canyon. Up there, we would hunt. Having two homes helped us find everything we needed all year long.

Today, we still live in our amazing canyon home. Our village is called Supai, and it is a wonderful place to live. We have incredible waterfalls near our village. The blue-green water tumbles and splashes down the tall rocks. We welcome kind visitors who travel to see the beauty of our home. We are happy to share our culture with them. We continue to tell our important stories, sing our special songs, and take good care of our land. We are the Havasupai, and this will always be our home.
