The Story of the Great African Savanna
Feel the warm sun on your skin and look up at the biggest, bluest sky you have ever seen. All around you, golden grass dances in the breeze, stretching so far it touches the sky. Here and there, special trees with flat tops, called acacia trees, give a little shade. If you listen closely, you might hear the mighty roar of a lion or the happy trumpet of an elephant splashing in a waterhole. I am a place of endless grass and sunshine. I am the great African Savanna.
My story began a very, very long time ago, millions of years before there were any people. The world was changing, and the climate here in Africa became drier. The thick forests shrank away, and in their place, I grew into wide, open plains of grass. I am proud to be called the 'Cradle of Humanity.' That’s a fancy way of saying I was the very first home for modern people, just like you. Around 200,000 years ago, the first humans lived on my lands. I watched them learn to work together, to find food, and to create the first families. I kept them safe under my big sky and gave them everything they needed to grow strong and smart.
I am a home for everyone, big and small. My most exciting event is the Great Migration. I call it my thundering parade. Millions of wildebeest and zebras race across my plains, making the ground shake with their hooves. It is a sight you would never forget. But they are not my only residents. Tall giraffes stretch their long necks to nibble leaves from my acacia trees, and playful elephant families march to the nearest river for a drink. For centuries, I have also been a home to the Maasai people. They first arrived in the 15th century, and they are my caretakers. They live in harmony with my animals, understanding that we all share this land. They wear bright red clothes and teach their children to respect every lion, every zebra, and every blade of grass.
Today, people from all over the world come to visit me. They ride in special cars on safaris, their eyes wide with wonder as they see my animals living free and wild. I love sharing my beauty and my ancient stories with them. I am a living storybook of nature and history, and I hope that when people visit me, they remember how important it is to care for our amazing planet. My grassy plains, my incredible animals, and my big, open sky will always be here to inspire you to protect the wonderful world we all share.
