The story

The White City by the Sea

Imagine a place where sparkling white buildings rise up from the shore of a bright blue sea. The sun warms the walls, and the air is filled with the sound of seagulls calling to each other. You can hear the happy chatter from busy markets where people sell sweet dates and colorful spices. I am that place. I am Algiers, the beautiful White City, the capital of a country called Algeria, in Africa. My story is as long and winding as the little streets in my oldest neighborhood.

My story is very, very long. I was refounded a long, long time ago, in the year 960, by a leader named Buluggin ibn Ziri. He helped me grow strong. My old heart is called the Casbah, and it is a wonderful place with narrow, twisting streets that are like a maze. It was built to keep people safe and cool from the hot sun. In the 1500s, I became very important. Brave sea captains, like the famous Hayreddin Barbarossa, sailed their ships from my port. They made me a powerful city on the sea. People from all over the world came to my shores. Then, in the year 1830, people from a country called France arrived. They built a new part of the city right next to my old Casbah. Their streets were wide and straight, and their buildings looked very different. Now, I am a city where old and new live right next to each other, like two friends holding hands.

One of my happiest days was July 5th, 1962. On that day, the country of Algeria became independent, and I proudly became its capital city. There was so much joy and celebration in my streets. Today, I am a busy, modern city. Trams glide down my wide avenues, and museums are filled with beautiful art. I have a wonderful botanical garden called Jardin d'Essai du Hamma, where families can walk among amazing plants and trees from all over the world. My air is filled with a mix of music, from traditional songs to modern tunes, showing how many different cultures have made me who I am.

My heart still beats strongly today, especially in my old Casbah. It is so special with its winding alleys and ancient stories that in 1992, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site. This means the whole world agrees it must be protected forever. I hope one day you can imagine visiting me, to see my white buildings shine in the sun and to feel the sea breeze whisper stories from long ago. I am a city that is both ancient and new, always full of life and welcoming to everyone.
