In 1606, a Dutch explorer named Willem Janszoon made the first documented European landing on my northern coast. But it was in 1770 that a British captain named James Cook sailed his ship, the Endeavour, along my entire eastern coast, mapping it for the first time for Europeans. This mapping led to a new chapter of big changes. On January 26th, 1788, the British First Fleet arrived, establishing a penal colony and starting a wave of European settlement. Life changed dramatically for the First Peoples who had called me home for so long. Decades later, in the 1850s, something shiny was discovered in the ground: gold. The news of gold rushes brought people from all over the world, from China to America, all hoping to find their fortune. My family of people was growing, and on January 1st, 1901, the separate British colonies decided to join together, and the nation of Australia was born.
