Just want Black Forest?
Listen closely. Can you hear the whisper of leaves rustling in the wind and the gentle gurgle of cool streams flowing over smooth stones. Look up, way up, at my tall, dark trees. I am covered in a thick blanket of fir and pine trees, and their deep green needles make my shadows long and my woods look dark from far away. People thought I looked like a forest dressed in black. That's why they gave me my name. I am the Black Forest, and I live in a country called Germany.
My story is very old. Long, long ago, around the 1st century, Roman soldiers marched through my paths. They looked at my dark trees and gave me a special name in their language: 'Silva Nigra,' which means Black Forest. Many years passed. Then, around the 12th century, people discovered a secret hidden beneath my roots. It was shiny silver. They began to mine the silver, and towns grew among my trees. My gifts didn't stop there. Clever craftspeople used my wood and my sand to create beautiful, sparkling glass. In the 18th century, they used my wood for something even more special. They carved wonderful cuckoo clocks, with a little bird that pops out to sing the time. People loved them so much.
My deep, quiet woods and winding paths have always made people's imaginations run wild. Two brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, loved these stories. In the early 19th century, they traveled around listening to the tales that people told by the fire. They wrote them all down so the stories would never be forgotten. On December 20th, 1812, they published their first book of fairy tales. When you read a story like 'Hansel and Gretel,' about two children lost in the woods, you might be picturing a place that looks just like me.

Today, I am not so dark and mysterious. I am a happy place where families come to explore. Children hike on my sunny trails, listen for the cheerful 'cuckoo' of the clocks in my villages, and eat a delicious dessert named after me, Black Forest cake. I am a place where history, nature, and imagination all meet. Come visit me sometime, and maybe you will find a new story waiting for you among my trees.
