The story

The House of a Thousand Stories

I am a very big, grand building in a busy city called London. I have tall, strong columns outside, like a giant's doorway. Inside, my rooms are filled with amazing treasures and stories from all over the world and from long, long ago. I feel like a house full of wonders. I am the British Museum.

My story began with a kind man named Sir Hans Sloane. He loved to collect interesting things—shiny shells, colorful plants, and ancient books. He had so many wonderful things! In the year 1753, he decided he wanted to share his collection with everyone so they could learn and be happy. A special law was made, and I was born! I opened my doors for the very first time on January 15th, 1759, ready to show everyone the amazing things inside. I was so excited to have visitors.

Over the years, more and more wonderful things came to live with me. I have sleepy mummies from ancient Egypt, tucked in their special cases. They have been resting for a very long time. I also have the Rosetta Stone, a super important stone that helped people read a secret picture language from thousands of years ago. It’s like a key to a secret code. Every object has its own adventure and its own story to tell.

Today, my doors are open for free to everyone! Children, grown-ups, and friends from all over the world come to visit me. You can walk through my big, bright rooms and say hello to history. I am a happy home for the world's stories, and I love sharing them with curious explorers just like you. I hope you come see me one day.
