The story

A Grand House in London

I stand tall and grand in a big, busy city called London. I have a big, fancy gate and guards who wear tall, fuzzy black hats and bright red coats. Lots of people come to see me every day. They smile and wave at the guards who stand so still. Do you know who I am? I am Buckingham Palace, a special home for kings and queens. I am very proud to be so important and beautiful.

I wasn't always a palace. I started as a big brick house for a man called the Duke of Buckingham way back in 1703. It was a lovely home, but it was just a house. Then, in 1761, a kind king named King George III bought me for his wife, Queen Charlotte. It was a cozy home for their family. It wasn't until a young queen named Victoria moved in on July 13th, 1837, that I became the main home for the royal family. She loved me very much and added my famous balcony so she could stand outside and wave to everyone below.

Now, I am a home, an office, and a place for wonderful parties and parades. When the flag is flying high on my roof, it means the King or Queen is home. I love watching families smile as they see my guards march back and forth with their important steps. I am a piece of history that everyone can visit and see. I hope when you see me, you feel like you're part of a real-life fairy tale.
