The story

The Star-Gazing Tower

I look like a stone bottle reaching for the sky. I am in a big, grassy field in a city called Gyeongju. At night, the stars twinkle all around me, like tiny, sparkling friends. For a very, very long time, I have watched the moon and stars dance across the sky. Do you know who I am? I am Cheomseongdae, a special tower for star-gazing.

A kind and clever queen named Seondeok had me built a long, long time ago. She wanted her people to understand the sky. Long ago, smart people would peek through my window. They would watch the stars move to learn about the seasons. This helped farmers know the best time to plant their seeds so everyone would have yummy food to eat. I am made of many, many stones, like building blocks stacked up high.

Today, people don't climb on me anymore, but they come from all over the world to visit me. On December 20th, 1962, I was named a special treasure of Korea. Children run and play in the fields around me, and at night, families look up and see the same stars I have watched for so long. I am a happy reminder that looking up at the sky is full of wonder, and we can all be star-gazers.
