Just want Jeju Island?
The sea wind whispers stories as it sweeps across my green fields, which are stitched together by dark, sturdy stone walls. It hums a tune that only the waves understand as they crash against my black volcanic shores, a constant rhythm against the silence of my ancient craters. In the spring, the air grows sweet with the scent of tangerine blossoms, a fragrance that promises warmth and new beginnings. For thousands of years, I have been a quiet observer, a guardian of tales etched into my very rock. People come to me seeking peace, adventure, and a connection to something ancient and powerful. They walk my trails, listen to my winds, and feel the history thrumming just beneath their feet. I am a place born of elemental forces, a sanctuary shaped by nature and human endurance. I am Jeju Island, a volcanic jewel resting in the sea south of the Korean Peninsula.
My story begins not with people, but with fire and water. Around 2 million years ago, deep beneath the ocean, volcanoes roared to life. Again and again, they erupted, spewing molten rock that cooled and hardened, slowly building me up from the seabed. My heart and soul, the great volcano Hallasan, stands at my center. It was its final major eruption, around 25,000 years ago, that sculpted my final form, leaving a beautiful crater lake at its peak like a watchful eye. From that great fiery birth, 368 smaller cones, which my people call 'oreum,' bubbled up across my landscape, giving me my distinctive rolling hills. The rivers of lava also carved incredible tunnels deep within me. One of them, the Manjanggul lava tube, is among the longest in the world, a magnificent, hidden cathedral of stone. My very soil, the dark rocks that form the walls of homes and fields, are all gifts from these ancient fires, a constant reminder of my powerful beginnings.
The Island Forged by Fire and Wind

My very soil, the dark rocks that form the walls of homes and fields, are all gifts from these ancient fires, a constant reminder of my powerful beginnings.
Long after my fires cooled and my slopes were covered in green, the first people arrived. They were brave and resourceful, and they founded the Tamna Kingdom, a proud and independent state that thrived here for centuries. Their kingdom lasted from ancient times until it was formally absorbed by the great Goryeo Dynasty in the 12th century. The people of Tamna learned my secrets. They knew how to live in harmony with my unique landscape, using my abundant volcanic stone to build strong walls to protect their fields from the wind and to construct sturdy shelters. It was during this time that they carved the first Dol Hareubang, or 'stone grandfathers.' These large, friendly-faced statues were placed at the entrances of villages to act as guardians, watching over the people and warding off evil. This was a time of deep connection, when the people saw me not just as a place to live, but as a partner in their survival and prosperity.
But my history is not only one of quiet harmony. My isolation in the sea sometimes brought conflict to my shores. From 1271 to 1273, I became the final stronghold for the Sambyeolcho Rebellion, where brave fighters made their last stand against the invading Mongol forces. Later, during the Joseon Dynasty, my distance from the mainland made me a suitable place of exile. Scholars, artists, and officials who had fallen out of favor with the king were sent here, bringing their knowledge and sorrow with them. They found solace in my natural beauty, writing poetry about my dramatic cliffs and windswept fields. The most difficult chapter of my story began on April 3rd, 1948, with the start of the Jeju Uprising. It was a deeply sorrowful and painful period for my people, a time of immense loss that left scars on the community. This history is not remembered for the pain, but for the incredible strength and resilience of my people, who endured unimaginable hardship and began a long, difficult journey toward healing and peace.
Through these trials, my people’s spirit never broke. It is most powerfully embodied by the legendary Haenyeo, the 'women of the sea.' For generations, these incredible women have made their living by free-diving into the cold ocean waters to harvest seafood, a tradition of strength and courage passed down from mother to daughter. Their skill and deep knowledge of the sea are recognized as a vital part of my cultural heritage. In recent decades, the whole world has begun to recognize how special I am. In 2002, UNESCO designated me as a Biosphere Reserve, honoring the harmonious relationship between my people and my nature. Then, in 2007, my volcanic landscape and lava tubes were named a World Natural Heritage Site. Finally, in 2010, I was recognized as a Global Geopark. These three titles together are my crown, a promise from the world that I am a treasure for all humanity, a place that must be protected and cherished forever.
Today, I am more than just my past; I am a living symbol of peace and resilience. I am a place where people come to heal, to find inspiration in art, and to reconnect with the raw power of nature. My 'olle' trails, a network of walking paths that circle my entire coastline and cross through my forests and villages, invite visitors to slow down and listen. They can hear the stories the wind tells as it rustles through the silver grass, feel the strength of my history in the ancient stones beneath their feet, and witness the enduring spirit of my people in every smiling face. My greatest gift is showing how nature and humanity can face hardship, heal together, and create breathtaking beauty from the ashes of the past. My spirit, forged in fire and tempered by the sea, will continue to inspire all who come to my shores for generations to come.
