Just want Kelp Forest?
Imagine you are floating in cool, clear water. Sunlight sparkles down from above, dancing like golden ribbons all around you. You are not alone. All around, tall, green-and-gold towers sway gently back and forth, reaching up, up, up toward the light. It feels like being in a magical, waving city hidden beneath the sea. This city is a safe and cozy home for so many wonderful creatures. Hello. I am a Kelp Forest, an underwater city full of life, and I want to tell you my story.
I may look like a forest, but my tall towers are not made of wood like trees. I am made of a giant, fast-growing algae called kelp. I am very, very old. My family has been growing in the oceans for millions of years, long before people were even around. My long, waving leaves are the perfect place for my animal family to live. Colorful fish play hide-and-seek among my fronds, and playful sea otters zip and zoom through my corridors. We all live together, but we have a special secret to keeping our home healthy. Spiky little creatures called sea urchins love to munch on my kelp. They have a big appetite, and if they eat too much, my beautiful forest can disappear. But I have special helpers. My sea otter friends love to eat sea urchins. They keep the urchins from eating too much of me. For a long time, people didn't know about this important friendship. Around the 1970s, scientists began to watch us closely and learned that the otters were my guardians. By protecting my otter friends, people learned they could help protect me, too.

I am more than just a home for my animal family. I am a helper for the whole planet. I provide a safe nursery for baby fish and a hiding place from bigger, scarier fish. My waving fronds help keep the ocean water clean, and by standing strong together, my kelp towers protect the nearby shores from big, crashing waves. Today, people can visit me. Divers swim through my golden hallways, watching the fish and otters play. It makes me happy to share my beauty with them. I am an underwater treasure, a special world that needs our protection. By keeping the ocean clean and safe, you help me stay strong. Then I can continue to be a wonderful home for my animal family and a place of wonder for people for many, many more years.
