The story

The Sunny City of Madrid

Can you feel the warm sunshine on your cheeks. Listen. Can you hear happy guitars playing a little song. Mmm, something smells so yummy. It’s like sweet chocolate and warm, sugary churros. People are laughing and walking through my big, open squares, which are called plazas. It’s always a happy day here, full of sunshine and smiles. Do you know who I am. I am Madrid, the sunny capital city of Spain.

I wasn't always a big, busy city. A long, long time ago, in the 9th century, I started as a little fortress on a hill. A ruler named Muhammad the 1st built my first walls to watch over the land and keep everyone safe. My walls were like strong arms, hugging the little town inside. For many years, I was just a quiet little place. Then, one day, a very important person came to visit. His name was King Philip the 2nd. He looked all around and thought I was the perfect place to be the heart of Spain. On a sunny spring day, May 8th, 1561, the king made his choice. I felt so proud when he said I would be the capital. After that, I grew and grew, like a tiny seed turning into a big, strong tree. People built grand palaces for kings and queens and planted lovely green parks for everyone to enjoy.

Now, I am a bustling city filled with art, music, and laughter. You can see amazing paintings in my Prado Museum or ride a little boat in my beautiful Retiro Park. It is so much fun. People love to dance, sing, and share delicious little snacks called tapas with their friends. I love being a place where friends and families from all over the world can come together to share stories and make happy memories. I am here to share my sunshine with you.
