The story

The Mountain That Touched the Sky

The sun warms my rocky face every morning, and a shiny white cap of snow always sits on my head. I am shaped like a giant pyramid, with four sharp sides that point right up to the sky. Far, far below me are green valleys and tiny villages. I stand right between two wonderful countries, Switzerland and Italy, like a friendly giant watching over them. For a very long time, people just looked up at me with wonder. They whispered stories about my sharp peak. I am a mountain that has watched the world for millions of years. I am the Matterhorn.

I was born a very, very long time ago, even before there were people. Giant sheets of ice, called glaciers, slowly carved my sides, making me steep and pointy. For centuries, people would say, “That mountain is too tricky. No one can ever climb to the top.” But I waited. I knew one day, someone brave would try. A man from England named Edward Whymper dreamed of standing on my peak. He tried many times, but my steep, rocky walls were very challenging. He never gave up. Finally, on a sunny day, July 14th, 1865, Edward and his team of climbers made their way up my side. They worked together, helping each other over icy spots and tricky rocks. At last, they stood on my very top. They were the first people ever to see the world from my summit. I was so proud. Just three days later, on July 17th, 1865, another brave climber from Italy, Jean-Antoine Carrel, reached my peak from the other side. It was a time of great celebration.

Today, I am still here, standing tall and proud in the Alps. I have become a famous symbol of strength and beauty. People travel from all over the world just to see me. They hike on the green paths below and take many pictures of my snowy peak against the bright blue sky. Some very brave climbers still follow the paths that Edward and Jean-Antoine first made. They want to feel the same excitement of reaching for a big dream. I love watching them. I hope I remind everyone that even if something looks impossible, with courage and teamwork, you can reach the top of your own special mountain.
