The story

The Story of the Sleepy Giant

I stand tall on a sunny island, surrounded by the big blue Atlantic Ocean. The sun warms my rocky slopes, which are full of colors that look like they belong on the moon. Sometimes, when the air gets chilly, I wear a beautiful, snowy white hat on my peak. People travel a long way to see me. Hello. I am Mount Teide, a sleepy volcano and the tallest mountain in all of Spain.

I have a very fiery story. I was born a long, long time ago, starting around 180,000 years ago, from many big, fiery burps deep inside the Earth. These eruptions built me up, layer by layer, until I was the giant you see today. The first people to live here, the Guanches, lived on my slopes. They thought I was a powerful and sacred place, and they respected me very much. Many years later, famous explorers saw me from their ships. On his big journey in August of 1492, a man named Christopher Columbus saw one of my smaller eruptions as he sailed by. He wrote about my fiery glow in his journal. My last little rumble was from a vent on my side on November 18th, 1909. Don’t worry, though. I have been peacefully resting ever since.

As time went on, people realized how special I am. On January 22nd, 1954, a wonderful thing happened. All the land around me was named Teide National Park. This means that everyone works together to protect me and all the unique life that calls me home. My special rocks, my colorful little lizards, and my sturdy plants are all kept safe. Because my air is so clear and I am so high up, I am one of the best places in the world to see the stars. That is why scientists built the Teide Observatory right on my shoulder. From here, they can look deep into space at shimmering stars and distant galaxies.

I am a mountain full of wonder, from my fiery past to my starry nights. I hope one day you can imagine visiting me, hiking my colorful trails, and feeling the warm sun on your face. At night, you could look up and see the Milky Way stretching across the sky like a diamond necklace. I am a place that connects people to the amazing power of our Earth and the endless wonder of the universe. I love sharing my story with everyone who comes to see me.
