Just want Palenque?
Can you hear that? The deep, rumbling call of a howler monkey echoes through the trees, and a toucan with a rainbow-colored beak flashes by. The air here in Chiapas, Mexico, is warm and thick, like a steamy blanket. If you look closely, you can see stone walls and pointed rooftops peeking through a tangle of green vines. For centuries, I have been wrapped in this jungle blanket, my secrets guarded by jaguars and towering ceiba trees. I am a lost city of limestone palaces, grand pyramids, and wide-open plazas where kings once walked. I am the great Maya city of Palenque.
My story began long, long ago, as a tiny village founded around 226 BCE. For hundreds of years, I was a quiet place. But my most glorious days arrived with a boy who became a legendary king. His name was K'inich Janaab' Pakal, or Pakal the Great, and he took the throne on July 27th, 615 CE. Pakal had a grand vision. He dreamed of making me the most magnificent city in the land, a place filled with art and knowledge. He commissioned the construction of my incredible Palace, a maze of courtyards, galleries, and rooms with a unique four-story tower for watching the stars. He also ordered the building of my most famous structure, the Temple of the Inscriptions. He planned for this beautiful pyramid to be his own final resting place. My builders were masters of their craft. With only stone tools and their own strength, they cut, carried, and stacked enormous limestone blocks, carving them with stories of our gods and rulers.
The Stone City That Woke from a Dream

Imagine walking through my plazas during my peak in the 7th and 8th centuries CE. The air would be filled with the sounds of families talking, children playing, and artisans chipping away at stone. From my tall tower, wise astronomers tracked the paths of the sun, moon, and planets, creating calendars that were incredibly precise. In other rooms, scribes painted books and carved our history in picture-writing called hieroglyphs onto my walls, telling stories that we are still learning to read today. Life was made easier by clever engineering. A stone channel called an aqueduct brought cool, fresh water right through the heart of the city for everyone to use. And I wasn't the plain gray stone you see today. I was painted in brilliant reds, blues, and yellows, a vibrant jewel in the middle of the green jungle.
But even the greatest cities change. Around 800 CE, my people began to leave my courts and plazas. Slowly, my streets grew quiet, and the powerful jungle moved in to reclaim me. The roots of trees pushed through my floors, and vines climbed my temple walls. For almost a thousand years, I slept under a blanket of green, my story forgotten by the outside world. Then, in the 18th century, explorers stumbled upon my hidden pyramids, their eyes wide with wonder. The most thrilling secret, however, wasn't revealed until June 13th, 1952. An archaeologist named Alberto Ruz Lhuillier was exploring my Temple of the Inscriptions when he found a hidden stone slab on the floor. For four years, his team carefully cleared a secret staircase filled with rubble that led deep into the pyramid. Finally, they opened a heavy stone door and found the tomb of my greatest king, Pakal the Great, untouched for over a thousand years.
My sleeping days are over. Now, I am awake again, sharing my story with the world. In 1987, I was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, which means I am a protected treasure for everyone to visit and learn from. I am a window into the incredible world of the Maya people. I show how clever, artistic, and determined they were, building a city of such beauty without modern machines. I hope that when you see my temples reaching for the sky, you feel inspired to learn about the past and dream about the amazing things you can build, too. My stones still have stories to tell, and I will be here waiting for you to listen.
