Just want Pompeii?
I rest beside a tall, green mountain under the warm Italian sun, with the sparkling blue sea nearby. For many years, my stone streets were filled with happy sounds and my walls were painted with beautiful pictures. Families lived in my cozy homes, children played games in my courtyards, and the delicious smell of baking bread floated through the air. The mountain was my quiet neighbor, watching over me every day. Or so I thought. I am the lost city of Pompeii.
Long, long ago, around the 6th century BCE, people first started building me. Over hundreds of years, I grew into a bustling Roman town where life was sunny and bright. Chariots would rumble down my stone roads, and people would gather in my big open square, called the forum, to talk with friends and buy fresh fruit. Fountains splashed cool, clean water for everyone to drink, and behind the houses, secret gardens were filled with sweet-smelling flowers. I loved being a home, filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and busy people living their lives.
But one day, everything changed forever. On August 24th in the year 79 CE, my mountain friend, Mount Vesuvius, woke up with a giant roar. It wasn't a happy sound. It sent a huge, dark cloud of ash and tiny stones high into the sky, blocking out the sun. Slowly, the ash began to fall like a soft, gray snow. It fell and it fell, covering my streets, my houses, and my gardens, until I was completely hidden under a thick, heavy blanket. Everything went silent, and I fell into a deep, deep sleep for a very long time.

I slept under the earth for more than 1,500 years. Nobody even knew I was there. Then, in the year 1748, some explorers were digging in the ground and they found me. Imagine their surprise. They carefully brushed away all the ash and discovered my streets and homes, almost exactly as they were on that day so long ago. They found paintings still bright on my walls and even loaves of bread still waiting in my ovens. I was no longer lost. Today, people from all over the world visit me to see what life was like in Roman times. I am a special window to the past, reminding everyone that history is always right beneath their feet, just waiting to be discovered.
