The story

The Story of the Pont du Gard

I stretch high into the sky over a sparkling river in the sunny south of France. My body is made of beautiful, golden stone that glows in the sunshine. I am not just one bridge, but three bridges stacked on top of each other. My arches look like giant, stony smiles reaching from one side of the river to the other. People come from all over the world to look up at me and wonder how I was built so long ago. Can you guess who I am? I am the Pont du Gard, and I am a bridge with a very special secret. I was made for something much more important than just helping people cross the water.

My story begins almost 2,000 years ago, around the year 40 CE. A big Roman city called Nîmes was nearby, and it was very, very thirsty. The people needed fresh, clean water for their homes, their beautiful fountains, and their bathhouses. So, some very clever Roman engineers had a big idea. They decided to build a long water channel, called an aqueduct, to carry water all the way from a spring in the mountains to the city. I was the most important and the tallest part of that aqueduct. It took about 15 years to build me. Workers had to cut huge stones from the ground and fit them together perfectly, like a giant puzzle. They were so good at their job that they didn't even need any sticky mortar to hold my stones together. I stood tall and strong, ready to begin my important job.

For my first job, I carried fresh water across the river for hundreds of years. The water flowed through a special covered channel at my very top, like a secret river in the sky. It rushed all the way to Nîmes, making everyone in the city happy. But after many years, the great Roman Empire fell around the 6th century CE, and people stopped taking care of my water channel. I thought my work was done. But then, I got a new job. People started using my lower level as a bridge to cross the Gardon River. Horses and carts rumbled across my stone path every day. I was so helpful that people wanted to protect me. So, in the 1740s, they built a brand new road bridge right next to me. This way, the heavy carts could use the new bridge, and I could stay safe and strong for many more years.

Today, my life is much quieter. I don’t carry water in my secret channel or carts on my lower level anymore. Instead, I welcome friends and families from all over the world who come to see me. They walk along the riverbanks, have picnics, and swim in the cool water below my arches. I love hearing their happy voices. A very special thing happened on December 1st, 1985. I was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, which means I am a treasure for the whole world to protect and enjoy. I am proud to stand here, reminding everyone that great ideas and teamwork can create something beautiful that connects people for thousands of years.
