Staying Safe on Your Feet
When I am traveling on foot by walking or running, I am a pedestrian. When I'm near a street, it is very important for me to have a safety plan because cars are much bigger and faster than I am. My safety plan is a skill I call 'awareness.' This means I use my eyes and ears to know what’s happening around me. The first rule I always follow is to Stop, Look, and Listen before I cross any street, every single time. This simple habit helps keep me safe from traffic.
To cross a street safely, I first find the best spot, like a crosswalk with painted lines or a street corner. I stop at the edge of the curb and look left, then right, and then left one more time to check for any cars. While I am looking, I also listen for the sound of engines. If a car is coming, I wait for it to pass completely. If the coast is clear, I walk—and never run—across the street. As I walk, I continue to look and listen until I reach the other side. I also try to make eye contact with drivers so I know they see me.
Following these safety rules is important every day. This plan helps me stay safe and feel confident when I am walking near roads. It protects my physical health by helping to prevent accidents. Being aware of my surroundings is a skill that not only keeps me safe from traffic but also helps me make smart choices in many other parts of my life. It is about taking responsibility for my own well-being.
